MAY 1, 2014
As a Victim of the 2013 flood and campaigning for Councillor in Ward 11, I saw, first hand, the destruction to the homes of residents in the communities along the Elbow River. As Election Day neared, the campaign organization worked on a plan for future flood mitigation along both the Bow and Elbow Rivers.
As we reconstructed our home and put our lives back together again, I spoke with countless neighbors and residents in the affected flooded communities in the City of Calgary. The question that came up was: what would be done to protect the residential communities along the Bow and Elbow River for 2014?
On April 1, 2014, I made representation to the Ward 9 Councilllor as to our partnership with the Canadian Red Cross and my presentation for SECONDARY FLOOD MIGITATION STRATEGY PROPERTY PROTECTION PLAN. With the support of the Rideau –Roxboro Community Association (RR), the Community Audit was conducted on April 12, 2014. The results and report have been completed and it is planned that the Canadian Red Cross and Community Association representatives will meet with the Mayor of Calgary.
The RR Community Association, with great foresight, hired a Consultant to evaluate the affects of a berm in the RR community. In addition, the Consultant completed a number of water flood modeling based on 1 in 20 and 1 in 30 year flood events. Secondary flood protection needs to be implemented in the event of another flood.
We have launched a website for “A BETTER CALGARY”, www.abettercalgary.org outlining our intent to implement a strategy for secondary flood mitigation. We welcome you to view our website, become a member and sign our petition for flood protection for 2014.
In conclusion, the “A BETTER CALGARY” committee is working with the Elbow River in Calgary (ERIC) and await a request to meet with the Mayor, City Council and Senior City Administration charged with the responsibility for implementing the Emergency Flood Preparedness Plan for communities along the Bow and Elbow Rivers of Calgary.
Please encourage City of Calgary Officials to meet with representatives of “A BETTER CALGARY” at the start of Emergency Preparedness Week in Calgary (first week of May). Also call 311 to inquire about what the City is doing to protect communities along the Bow and Elbow Rivers for this upcoming flood season.
“WE NEED TO BE CALLING 311 NOW INSTEAD OF 911 LATER”
