We note the comments in today’s Herald newspaper (May 6th, 2014) of a prominent hydrologist who advises today he is concerned about the heavy snow pack and the potential for rain. We take that as a warning from a knowledgeable person of current high risk. Despite our numerous requests the City has not provided any plan for protection or flood management in 2014 so we are forced to make this formal, very serious, request.
Your immediate attention to the protection of our properties on or near the Elbow River in Calgary is requested. Time is of the essence.
Many of us have made every effort to protect our homes by following the measures advised by the City of Calgary including moving our electrical boxes above ground and flood proofing our basements, windows and doorways. We are limited in the physical protection we can implement in order to manage the risks to our property and our persons.
The City of Calgary has the expertise, external funding, internal funding, manpower, emergency response capability, equipment, machinery, fire hydrants, public lands and access to other resources that we, as private citizens, do not have.
We request the City of Calgary take immediate action to protect our properties and persons on the Elbow River in Calgary from high water from the Bow River, the Elbow River, storm water and groundwater. ERIC will assist you, if possible, in obtaining consents from individual homeowners where necessary.
The City has advised it normally has only nine hours to respond. We request that you act now so that you do not have such a limited time to protect our persons and our property. If the cost exceeds provincial funding and other funding available for this purpose, we ask the City work with us after the fact to determine how costs can be recovered.
We note that CEMA does not have a direct contact number or email address. We request this information be forwarded to them through you. In addition, we have contacted 311 and requested response from CEMA directly (246630).
