Your Worship Mayor Nenshi:
As President of A Better Calgary, I had the opportunity to meet with Mr. Andre Corbould at the Alberta Watershed Management Symposium on April 29, 2014. During our meeting I discussed in detail the letter I addressed to you on April 25, 2014 regarding the development and implementation of community disaster preparedness strategies for Calgarians living in Bow and Elbow River communities.
An outcome from my meeting with Mr. Corbould is that the Government of Alberta has allocated funding to the City of Calgary in advance for the development of community flood preparedness and mitigation strategies and equipment.
Further, Mr. Matt Machielse, Assistant Deputy Minister of Environment and Sustainable Resource Development stated that community flood mitigation projects, in the form of river berms and dykes, have been approved and will be funded by the Alberta Government.
To date, Calgarians living in Bow and Elbow River communities are not aware of any flood preparedness strategies and mitigation equipment that will be put into place in their community, in the event of a flood risk.
Given that the beginning of this year’s flood season is fast approaching (May 15), I am requesting a meeting with you, senior City of Calgary officials in the Departments of Water Resources, Water Services, and Emergency Management, and members of the A Better Calgary steering committee, to discuss The City of Calgary emergency flood preparedness and mitigation plan for Bow and Elbow River communities.
Time is of the essence, as anxiety among Bow and Elbow River community residents is increasing as the flood season approaches.
We look forward to the arrangement of our meeting.
Respectfully,
James Maxim
President, A Better Calgary
